Sorority History

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is an organization of college educated women committed to the constructive development of its members and to public service with a primary focus on the Black community.

​

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is a private, not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world.  Since its founding more than 300,000 women have joined the organization.  The organization is a sisterhood of predominately Black, college educated women.  The sorority currently has 1,000 collegiate and alumnae chapters located in the United States, Canada, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Jamaica, and the Republic of Korea.

 

The major programs of the Sorority are based upon the organization’s Five-Point Programmatic Thrust:

Chapter History

​

Auburn Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., was officially chartered on November 12, 1978. In the late 1970’s, several local Deltas observed that there were many sorors living in the Auburn-Opelika area. After much discussion, they began to explore the possibility of chartering a chapter. Thirteen Deltas came together and began the process of organizing to charter. Barbara Hill Pitts was selected as president of this group.  

Kathleen Wright who had recently been elected as Southern Regional Director in Huntsville, Alabama in 1978 received her first official call for a request to charter a chapter from the Auburn group. She conducted the chartering service on the campus of Auburn University and immediately followed up with a Chapter Management and Development Workshop.  
 

Auburn Alumnae Chapter was able to accomplish many great things with a small membership, family obligations and full-time jobs.  Some examples of outstanding programs were:  Hosted the late Soror Shirley Chisholm, first Black woman to run for President of the U.S. (on two different occasions) and Co-hosted a speaking invitation for Jesse Jackson to come to Auburn. The first priority was to offer community service and concentrate on projects that are focused on the Five Point program.  We emphasized Voter Education and Registration and development and training of our youth group, the DELTEENS, which are now known as EMBODI and GEMS.  
 

Since our chartering, for 41years, we have been a vital chapter in Lee County.  Due to the leadership, hard work, and determination Chambers County, Tallapoosa County, Russell County, excluding Phenix City, AL have been added to our service area. Our EMBODI, GEMS, Physical & Mental Health, Social Action, Political Awareness & Involvement programs serve throughout our service area. From Public Forums and Voter Registration Drives to Denim & Diamonds and Hat Affairs, our passion consists of educating and impacting our community.  
 

We are humbled to know that when the need arises, our community join forces for the greater good. Our partnerships include, but not limited to, Auburn University, Lee County Emergency Management Agency, American Red Cross, Relay for Life, American Cancer Society, and the local high schools & churches.  
We are truly blessed to have been afforded the opportunity to work for such a long time in our community. We are thankful for the many friends we have made along this journey. We are even more excited about the work we have yet  to do because we know that Grace, Determination, & Passion are priceless intangible assets that we have been blessed to receive.
